PURPOSE: To directly produce powder form polyphenylene ethers with a low fine particle content in a condensation reactor by subjecting phenol derivatives to an oxidative polycondensation in a specific reaction medium in the presence of a copper-based catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Phenol derivatives represented by formula are subjected to an oxidative polycondensation, in a reaction medium consisting of a mixture of 30 to 70 wt.% methanol-containing toluene and methanol and in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a complex formed by a non-basic cupric salt and morpholine or its C-substituted derivative, at 50 to 70°C, using a CO2 or O2 containing gas until a solid polyphenylene ether dispersion is obtained in the reaction medium. Powder form polyphenylene ethers, having an average particle diameter of 100 to 500 μ, wherein ≥70%, preferably ≥80%, thereof have particle diameters in the range of 200 μ, and a maximum content of particles with <10 μ particle diameter is <0.1%, are thereby directly obtained in the polycondensation reactor. In the formula, R1 and R2 are each halogen, (substituted)alkyl, (substituted)aryl, 1-18C hydrocarbon group or 1-6C alkoxy.
