Abstract:
PURPOSE: The titled pitch for providing carbon fibers having improved graphitization properties, orientation, etc., by heat-treating coal tar, extracting it with a solvent to give pitch containing no free carbon, heat-treating it in an inert gas.
CONSTITUTION: Soft pitch or middle pitch of coal tar is heat-treated at 350W 500°C to form mesophase, solvent-soluble materials containing the mesophase are separated and eliminated by solvent extraction to give pitch containing no free carbon. The pitch is heat-treated in an inert gas atmosphere at normal pressure or under reduced pressure at 350W500°C, so that 2W10wt% mesophase is formed as a quinoline-insoluble component, to give the desired pitch.
