PURPOSE: To obtain a 2-substituted-4-alkoxy-6-hydroxypyrimidine useful as an intermediate for an agricultural chemical and a medicine in one stage, by reacting a β,β-dialkoxyacrylic ester with a 1-substituted amidine or a salt thereof.
CONSTITUTION: A β,β-dialkoxyacrylic ester of formula I (R1 is 1W3C alkyl; R2 is 1W6C alkyl) is reacted with a 1-substituted amidine of formula II or II' (R3 is lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, lower alkylthio, aryl or NH2; HA is an inorganic acid, e.g. hydrochloric, sulfuric or nitric acid, or an organic acid, e.g. acetic acid) or a salt thereof in an inert solvent, preferably a lower alcohol or an aprotic polar solvent, at 50W200°C for 0.5W30hr to give a 2-substituted 4-alkoxyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine of formula III in one stage readily.
