PURPOSE: To prepare quinones useful as drugs or their derivatives simply using an inexpensive raw material, by oxidizing a specific aromatic compound such as thimol, etc. corresponding to the desired compound with a specified aromatic peracid.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic compound such as thymol, etc. shown by the formula I (A is H, or OH; R1WR4 are H, alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, or R1 and R2 together with C bonded to them may be linked to form ring), an inexpensive raw material, is reacted with an easily handleable and easily obtainable aromatic peracid such as m-chloroperbenzoic acid, etc. shown by the formula II (R5 and R6 are H, halogen, NO2, SO2OH, or COOH) preferably at 0W80°C in a molar ratio of the compound shown by the formula I /the compound shown by the formula II of 1/(2W3), to give a quinone shown by the formula III useful as a raw material for vitamin E or coenzyme Q10, etc. extremely simply.
