PURPOSE: To obtain the titled resin useful as an ion exchange resin, etc., by subjecting water-soluble methacrylic acid with a crosslinkable monomer to suspension polymerization in an aqueous solution comprising an alkali metal salt of CMC having a specific etherification degree and viscosity and an alkali metal chloride.
CONSTITUTION: Methacrylic acid and a nonconjugate unsaturated monomer (e.g., divinylbenzene, etc.) are added to an aqueous solution comprising an alkali metal salt of carboxymethylcellulose having an etherification degree of 0.60W 1.50 and a viscosity of 1wt% aqueous solution at 25°C of 10W2,500CPS and an alkali metal chloride (e.g., sodium chloride, etc.), and they are suspended and dispersed. Suspension polymerization is carried out using a radical polymerization initiator, e.g, benzoyl peroxide, etc., to give a spherical crosslinked polymer.
