PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, a raw material for pesticides, medicines, dyes and functional resins, in high yield under mild conditions, without discoloration and by-product formation, by reacting an alkali salt of a unclear substituted phenol with a nuclear substituted halogenated benzene.
CONSTITUTION: An alkali salt of a nuclear substituted phenol of formula I: (R is H, 1W12C alkyl, halogen, trihalomethyl, alkoxy group, etc.; n is an integer 0W5; R's may be the same or different when n is 2W5; M is alkali metal) is reacted with a nuclear substituted halogenated benzane of formula II: (R' is H, 1W12C alkyl, halogen, trihalomethyl group, etc.; m is an integer 0W5; R's may be the same or different when m is 2W5; X is halogen) in the presence of a nitrite, e.g. sodium or potassium nitrite, preferably at 60W180°C, to give a compound of formula III.
