Title:
PREPARATION OF SWELLABLE STYROL POLYMER
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5256186
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
Expandable polystyrene particles are prepd. by suspension polymerisation of styrene, opt. together with other monomers, in the presence of blowing agents and suspension stabilisers. Suspension stabilisers are prepd. in aq. phase by radical polymerisation of 90-10(70-15)esp. 50-25 parts opt. substd. styrene, acrylic- or methacrylic acid esters with 1-8C alcohols, vinyl esters of satd. 2-12C monocarboxylic acids, nitriles or amides of acrylic- or methacrylic acid, vinyl chloride and/or butadiene, in the presence of 10-90 (30-85) esp. 50-75 parts polyvinyl pyrrolidone or vinyl pyrrolidone copolymers. Use of suspension stabilisers prepd. allows prodn. of expandable polystyrenes having internal water content 0.5%, depending on pearl size. Compared to >1% when using pure polyvinyl pyrrolidone, as control suspension stabiliser. Process is partic. useful when admixing monomer phase with blowing agent-contg. polystyrene pearls having particle size 0.4-0.9 mm., prepd. by suspension polymerisation with an organic protective colloid.
