PURPOSE: To provide a process for preparing tert-butyl alcohol from tert-butyl hydroperoxide in high conversion and selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: A feedstock of a solvent solution of tert-butyl hydroperoxide is brought into contact with a hydroperoxide decomposition catalyst of a mixture of Pd and Pt supported on alumina in liquid phase at a temperature of 20-200°C, particularly 80-100°C and, if desired, at a pressure of 0.1-7.0 MPa to produce tert-butyl alcohol. The catalyst is composed of alumina having 0.01-5 (wt.)% Pd and 0.01-5% Pt at a ratio of 0.1-10 pts. Pt per one pt. Pd deposited thereon and it is preferred that particularly equal weights of Pd and Pt are deposited in an amount of 0.1-1% based on the aluminum support, respectively. The solvent to be used for the feedstock solution is tert-butyl alcohol or a mixed solvent of tert-butyl alcohol and isobutane and in this case, the concentration of the tert-butyl hydroperoxide is in the range of 5-30%.
