PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound advantageously from industrial standpoint, useful as a vinyl phosphonic acid precursor, an adhesive agent and a plastic feedstock, by converting a dialkyl 2-acetoxyethane phosphonate in the gas phase in the presence of a solid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An ethane phosphonic ester (e.g. 2-acetoxyethane phosphonic dimethyl ester) of formula I [R3 and R4 are each a (substd.) 1-8C alkyl, 6-8C aryl or aralkyl; X is hydroxy, a halogen, OR5 (R5 is H, acyl, etc.)], is heated in the gas phase in the presence of a solid catalyst and converted to obtain a desired vinyl phosphonic acid derivative (e.g. dimethyl vinyl phosphonate) of formula II [R1 and R2 are each H, a (substd.) 1-8C alkyl, 6-9C aryl or aralkyl, or R1 and R2 may be joined together to form a 3-12C alicyclic ring].
