Abstract:
PURPOSE: To produce a water absorbent of good water absorbing/holding properties and biodegradability.
CONSTITUTION: The cross-linked alkali metal salt of a carboxyalkyl cellulose, produced by the reaction of an alkali metal salt of a carboxyalkyl cellulose with a polybasic carboxylic acid in a mixed solvent composed of water and a hydrophilic organic solvent and subsequent removal of the solvent and heat treatment at 130°C or above, is mixed with water to produce an aqueous gel, which is dehydrated with a hydrophilic organic solvent and then dried.
