Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a process for preparing a water-soluble copolymer containing copolymerized vinylamine units and being useful as an aid in papermaking.
CONSTITUTION: (a) 95-10 mol.% n-vinylformamide is copolymerized with (b) 5-90 mol.% ethylenically unsaturated monomer selected from the group consisting of vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, a 1-4C alkyl vinyl ether, N-vinylpyrrolidone, and esters, nitriles and amides of acrylic and methacrylic acids, and the resultant copolymer is treated with an acid or a base to release 30-100 mol.% formyl groups from the copolymer.
