PURPOSE: To enable safe and inexpensive production of the title compound which is used as an additive for lubricant, with no use of phosgene, by reaction of poly(oxyalkylene)alcohol with a carbonic acid ester followed by reaction of the product with an amine.

CONSTITUTION: The ester interchange reaction between poly(oxyalkylene)alcohol and a diaryl carbonate is carried out at room temperature to 150°C to give poly(oxyalkylene) carbonate. Then, the product is allowed to react with an amine such as ethylenediamine or diethylenetriamine in a solvent such as xylene to give the subject compound. The poly(oxyalkylene)alcohol is prepared from an alkyl-substituted phenol and butene-1 oxide and has a molecular weight of 500W10,000. It is added to hydrocarbon fuels or lubricants for internal combustion engines to reduce the deposition effectively.
