PURPOSE: To obtain the subject preventing and therapeutic agent, containing a /F-glucan, represented by a specific structural formula and having a high branching degree as an active ingredient and capable of manifesting high preventing and therapeutic activities against diarrhea by the peroral administration.
CONSTITUTION: This preventing and therapeutic agent contains a β-glucan represented by the formula [(m) denotes 80-0%; (n) denotes 20-100%] as an active ingredient. Furthermore, e.g. the glucan is obtained from a culture solution prepared by culturing Aureobasidium pullulans (IFO4466) at 5-40°C temperature for 1-10 days under aerating conditions. The physicochemical properties thereof are as follows: molecular weight: 2000000-5000000 weight-average molecular weight; color reaction: positive to the Molisch, anthrone sulfuric acid and phenol sulfuric reactions and negative to the ninhydrin, biuret reactions, etc.
