Abstract:

PURPOSE: To store solid-state o-toluic acid useful as a raw material of agricultural chemicals, medicines, polymerization initiators etc., without concretion even at a high temperature over a long period by drying it and, thoroughly preventing concretion thereof.
CONSTITUTION: A drying treatment is carried out by heating solid state o-toluic acid at 30 to 100°C, preferably 50 to 95°C and at ordinary to reduced pressure for 10min or less or by blowing an inert gas (e.g. nitrogen gas) onto crystalline o-toluic acid. The solid state o-toluic acid is produced in the form of a flaky, powdery or granular crystal generally by liquid phase oxidation of o-xylene. The produced material contains a very small amount of volatile substances as concretion-causing substances and the drying treatment is carried out for the purpose of evaporation thereof. The drying treatment is ready, economical and free from reduction of purity since no additive is used.
