PURPOSE: To prevent the formation of frost columns on the ground and to thereby prevent damage therefrom by applying a preventive against the formation of frost columns comprising hydrophobic particles to the ground.
CONSTITUTION: This preventive comprises hydrophobic particles, which may be any of the inorganic and organic substances that have hydrophobicity and are particulate. Hydrophobic particles obtained by treating the surfaces of sand or soil particles with a water repellent are practical, and can be used alone or in the form of a mixture. Particularly, water-repellent sand prepared by treating sand with a water repellent is the most desirable from the viewpoints of strengths, durability and cost. As the above sand, sea sand or mountain sand usually used as a civil engineering or building material can be used. Although the water repellent is not particularly limited, it is desirably at least one member selected from among a silane compound, a silicone compound and a fluorine compound. Sand treated with such a water repellent is the most desirable in respect of performances.
