PURPOSE: To avoid the generation of disturbance when a line is changed in spite of a thick portion such as an adhesive paste portion or stapled parts of an envelope by providing a gap motor, so that a head gap is widened in compliance with the completion of printing.
CONSTITUTION: Simultaneously when printing is started, a gap motor 4 and a carrier motor 19 are actuated, so that a head gap is gradually narrowed. The speed of the carrier motor 19 is gradually increased. When the speed of the motor 19 reaches a fixed speed, printing is started at the head of a line, and at the same time the gap motor 4 is stopped. At this time, a CPU 1 is controlled so that the head gap becomes the optimum distance for printing. When printing is finished at the end of the line, the speed of the carrier motor 19 is gradually decreased, and at the same time, the gap motor 4 is actuated to widen the head gap. The gap motor 4 and carrier motor 19 are concurrently stopped at a predetermined position to change the line.
