PURPOSE: To provide a printer which is printable to even a part where a paper thickness is different from each other by neither deteriorating a printing quality nor imparting damage to paper in the case where printing is performed to the paper having a difference in level and a control method of the printing.

CONSTITUTION: Although printing is made to perform by allowing a head gap to follow automatically a change of a paper thickness by making use of a paper thickness measuring function 6 and head gap setting function 7, therefore, prior to printing of the paper, a distribution of the paper thickness is measured by the paper thickness measuring function 6 of an automatic paper thickness adjusting mechanism 5 and its data is stored. Then at the time of performing the printing of the paper, a head gap is adjusted by the head gap setting function 7 of the automatic paper thickness adjusting mechanism 5 by making use of the data of the paper thickness distribution and the printing is performed by forming kinematically the head gap adapting to the paper thickness in a printing position of the paper.
