To provide a printer capable of controlling a traveling speed of an intermediate transfer ribbon to be constant with an inexpensive constitution, and a printing method.
The printer 20 has the intermediate transfer ribbon 28 for transferring information once printed by a thermal head 5 to a passbook 1 at a transfer part 4. The intermediate transfer ribbon 28 is wound by a wind-up shaft 31 on the downstream side from the transfer position. The intermediate transfer ribbon 28 is made to travel through the transfer position. A period of time from when a ribbon tensioner 34 for applying tensile force to the intermediate transfer ribbon 28 is sensed by an upper sensor 37 until the ribbon tensioner 34 is sensed by a lower sensor 38 is measured. A winding diameter is calculated from a rotating speed of the wind-up shaft 31 at that time. The intermediate transfer ribbon 28 is made to travel at nearly the same speed as the passbook 1.
