To provide a printer which can urge an operator to prepare for the replacement of an ink ribbon and enables him/her to smoothly replace the ink ribbon, by providing notification not only that the ink ribbon has to be immediately replaced but also that the ink ribbon has to be replaced before long, through the use of density printed.
The density is determined by making a high-density detection processing part compare the density level of a printing line with a first density threshold at a high level. When the printing density level is lower than the first density threshold, the density is determined by making the high-density detection processing part compare the density level of the printing line with the first density threshold at the high level again. When the printing density level in this case is also lower than the first density threshold, subsequently, the density is determined by making a low-density detection processing part compare the density level of the printing line with a second density threshold lower in level than the first density threshold. When the density level of the printing line is equivalent to/exceeds the second density threshold, the printer provides the notification that the ink ribbon has to be replaced before long. When the density level of the printing line is lower than the second density threshold, the printer provides instructions on the replacement of the ink ribbon.
