PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a tape printer in which a small tape cassette for multiple color printing and a large cassette for monochromatic printing having different shapes can be used commonly depending on the volume of tape being contained.
SOLUTION: A small tape cassette for multiple color printing or a large cassette for monochromatic printing is set replaceably in a cassette setting section 6 where a thermal head 7, a platen 8 and a ribbon winding shaft 9 for performing multiple color printing or monochromatic printing are provided and a tape rewinding shaft 9 is stood. A rewinding shaft 10 located at a position interfering with setting of a large tape cassette and dealing with multiple color printing comprises a base shaft section 10a being driven in the rewinding direction of a tape by a drive mechanism, and an engaging part 10b fixed rotatable thereto and tiltable through a spring 63. When a small tape cassette is set at the setting section 6, the engaging part 10b engages with a spool for winding the tape and when a large tape cassette is set, the engaging part 10b is tilted and retracted to a noninterfering position.
