An amount of deviation of a unit recording head in each recording head array in a sub-scanning direction is obtained based on a result obtained by reading a head alignment adjusting test chart for detecting the amount of the deviation the unit recording head in each recording head array in the sub-scanning direction. It is checked whether or not the obtained amount of deviation is in a predetermined permissible range (the printed result is correct (OK)) (524). When it is judged that the printed result is not correct, the alignment of the unit recording head of each recording head array in the sub-scanning direction is adjusted based on the obtained amount of deviation (526). The ink ejection timing of the unit recording head is adjusted (controlled) by a unit of a cycle of a printing pulse and the ink ejection timing of the unit recording head is adjusted (controlled) by a unit of a cycle of a control pulse.
