To detect the absence of sheets regardless of printing velocity without a print smear and further, certainly detect all printed sheets by providing a device to detect the sheets in the region of a sheet gripper on a reversing drum.
Sheets 5 are gripped by a gripper 8' mounted on a reversing drum 4 and are drawn out of a storage drum 3. In addition, sheet sensors 13, 14, each of which is composed of a detection unit 13 and an evaluation device 14 are mounted on the gripper 8'. In this case, these sheet sensors 13, 14 work at a gripper tip part 12 formed on the gripper 8'. The gripper 8' is installed in the crosswise direction which is orthogonal with a sheet running direction, so that all various sheets of different sizes can be detected. The sheet sensors 13, 14 are for example, of a pneumatic type to detect the presence of the sheets 5 by pressure difference measurement. In order to improve the detection of a measurement value, it is possible to shift the gripper 8 backward using gripper tongs 15 which are reduced.
