To provide the process of coating a carrier structure by which excellent evenness in the thickness of a coating in the axial direction of the carrier structure can be assured even in the case of using a coating suspension containing a solid matter in a high content.
The process involves the following steps; (a) vertically arranging cylindrical axes of a carrier structure and filling the empty spaces of the respective channels to a prescribed filling height H1 from the lower end face; (b) removing an excess coating suspension downward from the lower end face of the carrier structure until the intake amount reaches an aimed level; (c) turning the carrier structure upside down at 180° so that the upper end face and the lower end face are changed each other; and (d) repeating the steps (a) and (b). In the step (d), the filling height H2 up to which the channels are filled is defined as H2=L-xH1, wherein x is in a range from 0.8 to 1.0.
