To obtain a copolymer useful for fibers, films, packaging materials, or the like, in a manner for reducing the introduction of terminal groups derived from a boron hydrocarbyl compound used as a catalyst by bringing carbon monoxide and an olefinically unsaturated compound into contact with a specified catalyst under a specified hydrogen partial pressure.
Carbon monoxide (A) and an olefinically unsaturated compound (B) such as ethene or a mixture of ethene with an α-olefin (e.g. propene or butene-1) are brought into contact with a catalyst (D) based on a source of a group VII metal (e.g. palladium) and a boron hydrocarbyl compound {e.g. a compound of the formula: BXYZ [wherein X, Y, and Z are each a (substituted) hydrocarbyl such as an aryl]} in the presence of hydrogen (C) having a pressure of at least 0.01 MP to copolymerize component A with component B.
