PURPOSE: To provide a process for granulating and drying an alkali salt of carboxymethyl cellulose ether by which a dried powder with a uniform particle size is obtd. without generating a fine powder and which is applicable to a system contg. a solvent by adopting a specific process.
CONSTITUTION: An alkali salt of carboxymethyl cellulose ether is granulated by spray drying a solvent- and water-contg. slurry of it. The spray drying is done in an atmosphere of at least either an inert gas or air by pouring the slurry down onto a rotating disk or by spraying through a nozzle. The concn. of the salt in the slurry is pref. 5-70wt.%. The wt. ratio of the solvent to water in the slurry is pref. (3/97)-(40/60). The solvent is pref. a 1-4C alcohol.
