Title:
PROCESS FOR HYDROTREATING RESIN TO LIGHTEN COLOR
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3971468
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lighten the color of a specific hydrocarbon resin having carbon- carbon double bonds by bringing it into contact with hydrogen under specified conditions in the presence of a catalyst.
SOLUTION: This method for lightening the color of a substantially amorphous hydrocarbon resin having carbon-carbon double bonds and contg. color bodies essentially comprises obtaining a substantially amorphous hydrocarbon resin having a wt. average mol.wt. of about 250 - about 10,000 and bringing the resin into contact with hydrogen under a hydrogen pressure of 1-20 bar (14.5-290 psi) in the presence of a catalyst that promotes the hydrogenation of the color bodies without substantially changing the softening point or the content of carbon-carbon double bonds in the resin. The hydrogen pressure is pref. 1-15 bar (14.5-218 psi), still pref. 1-10 bar (14.5-145 psi). The catalyst is pref. at least one selected from the group consisting of Ni/Zn, Ni, Pd, and oxides thereof, Ni/ZnO being esp. pref.
