Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct a homogeneous acetylation of a cellulose without using large amounts of an acetylating agent and a reaction solvent.
SOLUTION: In the production of a cellulose acetate by acetylating a cellulose with an acetylating agent in the presence of an acidic catalyst under reduced pressure while distilling gas-phase components from the reaction system, a mixture of the acidic catalyst and the acetylating agent is added to the cellulose impregnated with a reaction solvent to initiate the reaction. The contact time of the acidic catalyst with the acetylating agent before the addition of the cellulose is shorter than about 10min, and the reaction initiating temp. is about 20 to 70°C. The equipment comprises an acetylation reactor 1, a mixing means such as a line mixer 2 for mixing the acid catalyst with acetic anhydride to be fed into the reactor 1, a pressure-reducing means 3 for reducing the pressure in the reaction system, and a condensing means 4 for condensing the gas-phase components in the reaction system.
