Abstract:

PURPOSE: To eliminate special sensors for marking cylinders by stopping fuel injection in a reference cylinder for a predetermined moment, detecting the combustion misfire caused by the stop of fuel injection, determining the stroke of the reference cylinder and producing a cylinder identifying signal from the result of determination and a position detection signal.
CONSTITUTION: After the start-up of an engine 1, injection of fuel of an electromagnetic injection valve for a reference cylinder is stopped for a predetermined moment purposely by a control system 7. An occurrence of a combustion misfire caused by the stop of fuel injection is detected based on the output of a detector 22 which detects the passing of teeth arranged on a disc 12 of a crankcase. Times of passing the top dead point between the moment of stopping of fuel injection and the moment of detecting the consequent combustion misfire is measured. The measured number of times is used to determine whether the stroke of the reference cylinder is an intake stroke or an explosion stroke. A signal for marking cylinders in phase with a position detection signal and initialized at the moment of top dead point of the intake stroke or explosion stroke of the reference cylinder is produced based on the result of determination.
