To readily obtain the subject adduct of a bisphenol with a phenolic compound by allowing a carbonyl compound to react with a phenolic compound in the presence of an acidic cation ion-exchange resin and crystallizing the product under specific conditions.
A carbonyl compound and a phenolic compound are allowed to react with each other in the presence of a catalyst of an acidic cation ion- exchange resin to obtain a reaction mixture containing unreacted phenolic compound, unreacted carbonyl compound and water. Then, the resultant reaction mixture is introduced into the crystallizer without distillation, further the content of the carbonyl compound is adjusted to 0.1-8 wt.% based on the whole weight of the reaction mixture and the water content is controlled to 1-18 wt.%, then the mixture is cooled down to 25-75°C under the pressure of 5-950 mbar to crystallize the product. In the reaction, the phenol compound is used in an amount of ≥2 moles per mole of the carbonyl compound. The bisphenol, the product, is useful for production of polymers as epoxy resins, polycarbonates and the like.
