To provide a process for producing a carbonate ester directly from an alcohol even under moderate reaction conditions.
There is provided a process for producing a carbonate ester represented by formula (2) by allowing a monohydric alcohol to react with carbon dioxide in the presence of one or more of alkali metal salts selected from carbonates of alkali metals and R1-CO-Z salts of alkali metals (wherein Z represents an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or the like) and one or more compounds selected from compounds represented by formulae (1-1) to (1-4). In formula (2), R and R', which may be identical or different, each represent a monovalent hydrocarbon group contained in the monohydric alcohol, X represents a halogen atom, Y represents a hydrogen atom or an alkoxy group.
