To perform a process for industrially advantageously producing a carbonic ester from carbon dioxide and an alcohol with the use of a catalyst comprising a metallic compound or a metallic compound and an acidic compound and an organic dehydrating agent as a continuous process.
In the process for producing a carbonic ester from carbon dioxide and an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metallic compound or a metallic compound and an acidic compound and an organic dehydrating agent, an acetal having a reaction equilibrium constant with water at a reaction temperature of 5.0103 to 1.0106 and a difference in the boiling point between itself and the carbonic ester formed of not less than 10C is used as the organic dehydrating agent. In this reaction, a reaction mixture comprising the organic dehydrating agent and a water reaction product is obtained, and from this reaction mixture, a distillate having the carbonic ester as the main component is separated, and the organic dehydrating agent and the water reaction product in the residual fluid are dehydrated to regenerate the organic dehydrating agent, and the regenerated organic dehydrating agent is recycled to the reaction step.
