To provide a process for producing a plugged honeycomb structure that attains reduction of production cost through shortening of production time, and an apparatus therefor.
A honeycomb structure 1 is masked, and a fluid plugging material 31 (slurry or paste) is fed on the mask or on the same plane as the mask. On the surface of the mask, a plugging device 24 with a pressurization plane for pressurization of the plugging material 31, arranged with an acute angle with reference to the surface, is moved so that the plugging material 31 is pressurized by the pressurization plane to thereby charge the plugging material 31 into the cells of the honeycomb structure. In particular, a partial area of the pressurization plane is brought into surface contact with the mask via the plugging material 31 and moved on the mask so that not only the plugging material 31 is pressurized toward the cells but also any excess plugging material 31 is pushed out along the moving direction and that further while forming an area of surface contact, the plugging material 31 is pressurized and charged into the cells.
