To provide a process for producing an oxirane compound by reacting an olefin with a hydroperoxide in the presence of a titanium-containing silicon oxide catalyst which has an excellent characteristic feature capable of obtaining the target oxirane compound in a high yield.
The process for producing an oxirane compound uses, as the catalyst, a titanium-containing silicon oxide catalyst in which not less than 10% of the entire pore volume of the catalyst have a pore diameter of 2-50 nm and not less than 10% of the entire pore volume of the catalyst have a pore diameter of not less than 100 nm. The specific surface area of the catalyst is preferably not less than 100 m2/g, more preferably not less than 200 m2/g. From the standpoint of enhancing the catalytic performance, it is preferred that the titanium-containing silicon oxide catalyst is provided with silylation treatment to be made into a silylated titanium-containing silicon oxide catalyst.
