To provide a process which is suitably used for polymerizing a radically polymerizable monomer in a relatively short time and quantitatively and producing a polymer and a block copolymer having a chemically convertible functional group at terminals while having a high molecular weight, and to further provide a process for producing a polymer in which after the polymerization reaction, an iron complex used is recovered in a general purpose solvent by reprecipitating the polymer in the solvent, in order to reutilize the iron complex.
The process for producing a polymer using an iron complex as a catalyst comprises generating, in a polymerization reaction mixture, a divalent iron complex obtained by subjecting a trivalent iron complex to a reducing reaction by iron powder, and using the divalent iron complex as a polymerization catalyst. The process for recovering a trivalent iron complex comprises, after producing a polymer, a step of separating an iron complex from a reaction mixture after the polymer is treated with oxygen, and a step of treating the iron complex obtained in the step with a halogenating agent.
