PURPOSE: To obtain a specified-octane number gasoline fraction with a reduced benzene content by mixing a distillate obtained by hydrogenating a light reformate with a straight distilled 5 or 6C fraction and isomerizing the mixture with a halogen and a specified alumina-supported catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A distillate 4 obtained by hydrogenating a light reformate 2 (definition: 40-80 wt.% paraffin; 0.5-7 wt.% cyclohydrocarbon; 6-45 wt.% aromatics; a maximum distillation temperature of 70-90°C) from a distillation tower 6 in a hydrogenation zone 7 and a 5 or 6C fraction 11 (definition: paraffin >90 wt.%; cyclohydrocarbon <10 wt.%; benzene <1.5 wt.%) are mixed and then fed into an isomerization zone 8. It is also possible that the feed to be hydrogenated is mixed with the 5 or 6C fraction. A halogen (e.g. CCl4 or the like) is added to the feed to be isomerized, and the mixture is isomerized in the presence of a catalyst prepared by chlorinating a VIII group metal (platinum, palladium or nickel) supported by a support comprising 85-95 wt.% η-alumina and the balance of γ-alumina. According to this process, the benzene content of the gasoline can be reduced while the specification of an octane number can be satisfied.
