PURPOSE: To enable a soln. of a (substd.) mercaptobenzothiazole amine salt to be stored at room temp. by dissolving the salt in a specific solvent and mixing the resultant soln. with a lubricating oil.
CONSTITUTION: A mercaptobenzothiazole compd. of formula I (wherein R is H, an alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, or alkaryl) is reacted with an amine of formula II (wherein R1 and R2 are each a 1-20C alkyl; and R3 is a 6-25C alkyl or alkenyl) in a molar ratio of (1:1.1)-(1:0.7) in the absence of a solvent at 45-120°C for 0.5-5 hr to give a (substd.) mercaptobenzothiazole amine salt. The salt is dissolved in a solvent of formula II (wherein n is 1-3; and R8 is an alkyl, cycloalklyl, aryl, or alkaryl) in a molar ratio of (1:3)-(1:5), and the resultant soln. is mixed with a lubricating oil having a viscosity (100 °F) of 40-350 Saybolt seconds.
