PURPOSE: To obtain an aldehyde and an alcohol by mixing an unsaturated hydrocarbon substrate with hydrogen and CO, contacting and reacting the hydrocarbon substrate with the neutral activated species of the mixture of reactants activated to the plasma state.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrogen and CO are activated in a plasma reactor and an unsaturated hydrocarbon substrate is contacted with the activated mixture outside the activated space of the reactor to obtain an aldehyde and an alcohol. A plasma reactor of point-plane corona discharge type is preferred in which the tip electrodes are attached parallel to a flat electrode and the substrate is introduced into the axis of the tips in the downside of the activated part between the tips and the flat surface. In this method the reaction is carried out at a temperature of 25-30°C at an atmospheric pressure without using a catalyst and with a rapid reaction rate in 5-10 min.
