To produce 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride which is used as a water-soluble dehydration condensing agent in high yield.
1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide is treated with a hydrogen chloride gas in one or two or more of solvents selected from aromatic hydrocarbon, halogenated hydrocarbon and ether group-containing alcohole solvents by introducing hydrogen chloride gas into the carbodiimide solution to form its hydrochloride salt. Then, as a crystallization solvent, are used one or two or more selected from aliphatic and/or alicyclic hydrocarbons and ethers and esters to effect crystallization to obtain the objective hydrochloride salt. In this process, the reaction is easily carried out with simple apparatus, and can be easily scaled up.
