To produce the subject compounds capable of providing easy operations to separate a solvent from a reactional product and easily removing the residual catalyst, etc., by washing with water and useful as an intermediate for a triazine-based herbicide.
A phenol which is represented by the formula (R is a 1-5C alkyl; n is 0-5) and may have the alkyl group (e.g. phenol) is,reacted with a halogenated acetone (e.g. chlorinated acetone) in the presence of a base (e.g. sodium hydroxide) and a catalyst (e.g. sodium iodide) to produce the objective compounds. At this time, an aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. benzene) is preferably used as a reactional solvent. The ratio of the phenol : chlorinated acetone : base used is preferably 1:(1.05-1.5):(1.05-2.0). The amount of the catalyst is preferably 0.5-5.0 wt.% based on the raw material compound.
