Abstract:

PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain the subject compound by reacting p-cymene with 2-methyl-2-butene in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride in a specific solvent.
CONSTITUTION: p-Cymene is reacted with 2-methyl-2-butene in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride (preferably aluminum trichloride) and a tertiary alkyl halide (preferably tert-butyl chloride) in a mixture (having a component (A)/component B ratio of 0.5/9.5 to 8/2) of (A) an aliphatic hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon (e.g. n-pentane, carbon tetrachloride) having a solubility coefficient of ≤9.3 at 25°C and (B) a chlorinated hydrocarbon (e.g. 1,2,3- trichloropropane) having a solubility coefficient of ≥9.5 at 25°C at a reaction temperature of -5 to +30°C to provide the objective compound.
