Title:
PRODUCTION OF 2-BROMO-1-(M-SUBSTITUTED PHENYL)ETHANOLS
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3805046
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate, etc., for medicines and agrochemical in high yield by hydrolyzing m-substituted α,β-dibromoethylbenzenes.
SOLUTION: A m-substituted-α,β-dibromoethylbenzenes of formula I (X is a halogen, trifluoromethyl, etc.) (preferably m-chloro-α,β-dibromoethylbenzene) is hydrolyzed to provide the objective compound of formula II. The reaction is normally carried out in a water solvent or a mixed solvent system of water with the organic solvent in the presence of an equivalent or more amount of water based on the compound of formula I. The hydrolysis reaction is preferably carried out at 50-150°C for 30min to 200hr. it is preferable that the reaction is carried out in the presence of an iodide material and the base, because reaction yield is improved. An alkali metal iodide or ammonium iodide is preferably used as the iodide. An inorganic base such as sodium hydroxide is preferably used as the base.
