Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily and efficiently obtain 2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylbenzal chloride which is useful as a synthetic intermediate for medicines, agrochemicals and a variety of functional material by chlorination of trifuloromethylbenzal chloride.
SOLUTION: In the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, (A) 4- trifluoromethylbenzal chloride is allowed to react with (B) chlorine to give (C) 2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylbenzal chloride. Addition of iodine to the reaction system increases its reaction rate and is recommended. The amount of the Lewis acid catalyst is preferably 0.005-0.1 equivalent, preferably 0.01-0.05 equivalent per 1 equivalent of the component A. The component A is readily prepared by using p-xylene as a starting substance.
