To provide a process for the easy and economical production of 2 -hydroxy-1,4 -naphthoquinone (2HNQ) having high purity from 1,4 -naphthoquinone (NQ) from a solution containing NQ-oxide obtained by the epoxidization of NQ without necessitating the operations such as the separation of NQ-oxide and the drying and pulverization of the product.
The objective compound is produced by oxidizing naphthoquinone dissolved in an inert organic solvent incompatible with water with an aqueous solution of a hypochlorite in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst to obtain 2,3-epoxy -2,3-dihydro -1,4 -naphthoquinone, reacting the compound with an alkaline compound dissolved in an alcohol and acidifying the resultant 2 -hydroxy-1,4 -naphthoquinone alkali metal salt with a mineral acid.
