Abstract:

To develop a production method of vitamin K3 (menadione) by electrolytic oxidation in high yield without requiring a complicated process.

1-methoxy-2-methylnaphthalene is electrolyzed in a methylalcohol solvent by using an alkali metal hydroxide and/or alkali metal mothoxide as the supporting electrolyte to produce 1,1,4-trimethoxy-2-methyl-1,4- dihydronaphthalene. The product is refluxed to remove alcohol to obtain 1,4- dimethoxy-2-methylnaphthlene. Then in the same electrolytic cell, the product is electrolyzed in an alcohol solvent by using the same supporting electrolyte to produce 1,1,4,4-tetramethoxy-2-methyl-1,4-dihydronaphthalene, which is then hydrolyzed to obtain 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone.
