PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful as herbicide in high selectivity and high yield by reacting new 3-(substituted pyridyloxy) benzohydroximio acid derivative with nitrating agent in the presence of fuming sulfuric acid.
CONSTITUTION: A new intermediate compound expressed by formula I (R is H, alkali metal or lower alkyl; R1 is lower alkyl; R2 is H or lower alkyl) X is H or halogen) is reacted with a nitrating agent in the presence of fuming sulfuric acid to afford 2-nitro-5(substituted pyridyloxy) benzohydroximic acid derivative. Fuming nitric acid or potassium nitrate is preferable as nitrating agent. A compound expressed by the formula II for R is H or alkali metal is able to be converted to a compound having R of lower alkyl by esterification.
