PURPOSE: To safely and efficiently obtain a 2-quinoxalinol compound of an intermediate product for the synthesis of chemicals in a high yield by performing the reduction of a 2-quinoxalinol-4-oxide compound with hydrogen as a reducing agent in the presence of a specific catalyst under prescribed conditions.
CONSTITUTION: The compound expressed by formula II is obtained by reducing the 2-quyinoxalinol-4-oxide compound expressed by formula I (R represents H, halogen or trihalomethyl) with hydrogen at 20-150°C under 6-60 atm, preferably at 30-120°C under 8-15 atm, with an effective quantity of at least one kind of a catalyst selected from a group consisting of platinum, rhodium, ruthenium and nickel as the catalyst. In such a case, the quantity of the catalyst to be used is preferably 0.01-100 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. compound expressed by formula I.
