Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a monomer for polyester or synthetic intermediate for 2-hydroxyfluorenones, by reacting a cyclohexanone-2-carboxylic acid derivative with phenols.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula III can be produced by reacting a cyclohexanone-2-carboxylic acid derivative of formula I (R is H or lower alkyl; R1 is lower alkyl; n is 0W4) with phenols of an acid catalyst (e.g. hydrogen chloride gas) at 20W100°C. The amount of the catalyst is 0.1W50 pts.wt. per 100pts.wt. of the compound of formula I. The phenols are preferably used in excess as a solvent, i.e., used in an amount of 2W10pts.wt. based on the compound of formula I.
