PURPOSE: To obtain in a high purity and yield the compound as a raw material for formulated perfumes or as an intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals, by only such a single step as to subject readily available, as a commercial product, or easily synthesizable chrysanthenol to rearrangement reaction in the presence of a basic or acidic catalyst.

CONSTITUTION: The compound, 2,2,4-trimethylcyclohexenecarboaldehyde of formula II can be obtained by rearrangement reaction of chrysanthenol of formula I in the presence of a basic catalyst e.g. KOH) or acidic catalyst (e.g. sulfuric acid). The chrysanthenol of the formula I has also been known as the fragrant component of chrysanthemum. The compound of the formula II obtained by the above method has camphor-, flower-, fruit-, wood- or herb-like fragrance/ flavor.
