PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing 2,3,6-trimethylphenol useful as an intermediate for vitamin E by allowing diethyl ketone to react with 1-amino- vinyl methyl ketone.
CONSTITUTION: Diethyl ketone is subjected to condensation reaction with 1- amino-vinyl methyl ketone in the presence of a base (e.g. KOH) in a solvent (e.g. cyclohexane) or in the absence of the solvent at a temp. of 50-200°C for 20-40 hr, preferably at a temp. of 70-150°C for 25-30 hr to provide the objective 2,3,6-trimethylphenol in the method for producing the 2,3,6-trimethylphenol. The diethyl ketone and the aminovinyl methyl ketone are used in the molar ratio of (1:1)-(50:1). To prepare the reaction mixture, generally the formed phenolate is neutralized and separated by fractionation, and the amine obtained from the distillation or as the bottom material of the distillation is reused for the production of the 1-aminovinyl methyl ketone.
