To safely produce the subject compound in high yield and a high selectivity by efficiently and para-selectively chlorinating 3-phenyl-1- bromopropane using a zeolite catalyst as a catalyst and a dichloroalkane as a reactional solvent.
(A) 3-Phenyl-1-bromopropane is para-selectively chlorinated in the presence of (C) a dichloroalkane (preferably 1,2-dichloroethane, etc.), using (B) a zeolite catalyst (preferably type L zeolite). The reaction is preferably carried out at 40-140°C by using the component B in an amount of 1-20 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. of the component A and the component B in a volume of 0.1-10 vol. based on 1 vol. of the component A. Simple substance chlorine is usually used as a chlorinating agent in a molar amount of 0.5-1 based on 1 mol of the component A. The reaction is usually conducted in the liquid phase by a batch method. The component A is preferably prepared by a Grignard reaction of a halogenobenzenemagnesium with 1,3-dibromopropane.
